Sauna Construction

Saunas, built the way this region expects.

Around here a sauna isn’t a luxury add-on — it’s heritage. ProCon builds custom saunas across Duluth and Northern Minnesota: indoor saunas worked into bathrooms and basements, and freestanding backyard sauna buildings with the walk through the snow included.

Two ways to build one

Inside the house,
or out in the yard.

Indoor saunas get worked into a bathroom remodel, a basement, or an addition — steps from your shower, usable every day of the year with no boots required. They’re the more affordable route and the one we build most often alongside bathroom remodels.

Freestanding backyard saunas are the full Northern Minnesota experience — a small building of its own with a foundation, roof, and siding matched to your home, and nothing but cold air between the bench and the snowbank. They also keep the heat and moisture loads out of your house entirely.

  • Vapor barrier done right. The difference between a sauna that lasts decades and one that quietly rots the wall behind it.
  • Proper venting & airflow. Fresh air in low, moist air out — sized to the room so the heat is even and the structure stays dry.
  • Cedar interiors. Benches, walls, and ceilings in species that handle heat and humidity without splinters or sap.
  • Heater sized & wired correctly. Electric or wood-fired, sized to the cubic feet and installed to code.
  • One licensed contractor. Foundation to bench — MN license #QB807406, insured, workmanship guarantee.

Indoor from ~$15k–$30k

An indoor sauna built into existing space typically starts in that range; a freestanding backyard building runs more — it’s a small building of its own. Written estimates are free.

Why a builder, not a kit
Moisture is the whole game

A sauna pushes heat and steam at the structure around it every time you fire it. Vapor barrier, venting, and framing are builder work — the part a kit can’t do for you.

Sauna questions

Answered.

Do you build custom saunas in Duluth?

Yes — indoor saunas worked into bathrooms, basements, and additions, and freestanding backyard sauna buildings, across Duluth and Northern Minnesota. We build them the traditional way: proper venting, vapor barrier, cedar interiors, and a heater sized to the room.

What does a custom sauna cost?

An indoor sauna built into existing space typically starts around $15,000–$30,000 depending on size and finishes. A freestanding backyard sauna building runs more — it’s a small building with a foundation, roof, and siding. The written estimate is free.

Indoor or backyard — which should I build?

Indoor costs less and is steps from your shower. Backyard is the full experience and keeps heat and moisture loads out of the house. We build both — tell us about your property and we’ll give you a straight recommendation.

Electric or wood-fired heater?

Electric is convenient and the usual choice indoors. Wood-fired is traditional and common for backyard buildings. Either way the heater gets sized to the room’s cubic feet and installed to code — an undersized heater is the most common complaint with kit saunas.
